I am a student of English Literature. Literature is divided into three major genres like poetry, novel and drama. I choose drama for my specialisation because drama reflects the human behaviour, thoughts and problem in life, by which I think, its reader are helped to see the reflection of themselves with in it. In short a play is just like a slice of life and I see a play like portray of a daily life. In plays I can discover such daily life issues such as love, tragedy, unhappy marriage, struggle for place in society and many more.

As I told you earlier I am a pessimist so today I would like to talk about tragedy. Tragedy is personal to the writer and the witness. It is our personal reaction to the situation which ultimately determines what we witness is tragedy or not. Because none of us can help the things life has done to us. They done before you realise it, and once they done they make you do other things until at last everything comes between you and what you’d like to be, and you have lost your true self forever.

The term tragedy as a literary term refers to a form of drama which presents a man who is trying to achieve his highest aspirations, but he fails in his struggle since he confronts some forces which are stronger than his greatest capacities.

For example
You get on a road and no matter what you do or how you try to change or correct your life, you can’t do it, because Fate, or Kismet, or whatever you call it, will push you down the road.

Most people believe in destiny and they don’t regret for their past. Though I don’t but I agree with Eugene O’neill, the past is the present, isn’t it? It is the future too. I too believe that the mistakes which we had done in our past shape our future and every single moment of life. We can’t just move on because the tragedy of life is not death but what dies within you when you are alive.

Still I believe tragedy is meant to reaffirm the fact that life is worth living, regardless of the suffering or pain that is part of human existence.

”Still I believe tragedy is meant to reaffirm the fact that life is worth living, regardless of the suffering or pain that is part of human existence.”

You got that so right ND... a person who hasn’t experienced tragedy in his own life tends to trivialize others problems...

it may make some people callous too but its better to take advice from a person who knows whats like to be low than from a person who can only tell you to cheer up since they know nothing else...

Talking about tragedy itself is way of purgation. But the onset of tragedy or sorrow depends on how deep one’s conflict is, and if there is no conflict, one will be indifferent to people and society around.Life is full of conflicts - if the conflict dies down - then there is emptiness - no life.

Very true. “The tragedy of life is not death but what dies within you when you are alive”. Each one is capable of doing something good valuable or meaningful. We must do that before we die. Or else this life itself would seem like a tragedy, bigger and larger than the death. Time is running fast. Act now, right at this moment.

I am also a student of English Literature, but my subject was novel. Though I love to read dramas, because it has a distinct charm. It seems you are inspired by the Shakespearean tragedy. At the end of every tragedy (drama) there is a fall of the hero, but not only situations, but his activities are also responsible for that fall.

We can live in a state of haoppiness or otherwise depending what we try to put in the current state of mind. If we think of a very bad past, present or future we will be in a state of trauma.

So to be happy we should always think about positive side of life. What we enjoyed and what we can enjoy today and tomorrow.
